Stormdefender® Door & Security Storm Shutters | Cornell IronDefender Series
Model Number: PSD361 and PRSD361 (fire-rated)
Cornell StormDefender® rolling storm shutters are reliable doors you can install to transform public spaces into shelters that protect against the most extreme weather. These storm-resistant doors fit seamlessly into existing buildings' architecture to remain hidden until you need them. At Cornell, we build each StormDefender® door to your custom specifications to deliver a perfect fit and look that complement your facility.
ICC- and FEMA-Compliant Rolling Storm Shutters
Rolling storm shutters are vital — and sometimes mandatory — safety features that you can install in a wide range of structures. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) publication P-361 and the most recent International Code Council (ICC) 500 guidelines require shelters to withstand the high winds expected with hurricanes and tornadoes, and the StormDefender® meets every demand. If your state follows the 2015 edition or a later publication of the ICC 500, depending on your location, you may be required to install a storm shelter if you operate a:
- Police station.
- Fire, EMS or rescue station.
- 911 or emergency call center.
- K-12 school with over 50 occupants.
These roll-up storm shutters can stand up against 250 mph winds and take the force of a 100 mph impact. They also meet the minimum mandated ICC-500 time requirements by providing shelter long enough to get through a tornado. Installing a StormDefender® system in your building will help you comply with these strict standards, ensure occupant safety and contribute to your eligibility for federal grant funding.
Dependable Storm Security Shutters With Innovative Features
StormDefender® security storm shutters come with a wide range of features designed to help protect your facility and keep people safe during severe weather. A unique feature is that these doors can be almost invisible in the open position until you need them to close and protect the shelter. You can customize yours to cover multiple windows, doors and openings for greater design freedom.
Every award-winning StormDefender® has features such as:
- Patent-pending windlocks. These doors come with windlock bars that run alongside the guides. Each slat is modified to rest in the windlock bar for added stability in severe storms and high-pressure events.
- Safety alarms. When the shutters need to close, the StormDefender® triggers a strobe light and audible horn. The combined alarms work to ensure everyone has a chance to clear the area and move to safety.
- Attractive hoods. StormDefender® doors stay out of sight when stored by coiling into galvanized steel hoods for protection. We color match all hoods to your custom door color for an aesthetically pleasing package.
- Durable construction. The shutter curtain and bottom bar feature high-quality 12-gauge steel. Our SpectraShield® powder coating in a gray finish protects the doors from damage.
- Reliable motors. Our exclusive AlarmGard™ rolling door motors offer the option for connection to an alarm system. You can also default to the closed position in the event of a power failure using optional battery backup power.
Upgrade your custom security storm shutters with several optional features for added performance and visual appeal. If you want to change the look of your StormDefender® rolling storm shutters, we offer over 180 additional SpectraShield® colors to choose from. You can also add our AtmoShield™ textured powder coating in 11 colors or opt for a clean and modern look using polished stainless steel.
Battery backup systems are essential to ensure your doors work, whether you have power or not. We also have storm security shutters with added protection from fire and smoke available. You can even install fire-rated StormDefender® doors equipped with smoke gaskets that meet UL10B three-hour fire standards and UL1784 requirements for smoke-resistance for greater safety.

Check Out How We've Helped These Clients With Custom Closure Solutions:
"We are very pleased with the performance of the Cornell doors. Throughout the area, doors are blown out everywhere and the building we just moved from was destroyed. Here, our $2.3 million of inventory was saved. Being satisfied with the Cornelldoors is an understatement!"
ROGER WEIR, OPERATIONS MANAGER AT LEWIS BEAR COMPANY
"CornellCookson had installed a rolling door for us in our old building. We used it all the time and it’s held up really well over the years. Calling them in again made perfect sense. We are thrilled with how this door looks. The level of detail that’s been captured so clearly on this large door is incredible. It’s exceeded our expectations by far and will definitely do its job as a focal point in our new building."
MARK WORMAN, OWNER OF GRAVEYARD CARZ
"The existing grilles we had installed prior could not stand up to the cycle usage, and they needed a lot of maintenance. Cornell's Extreme Performance 324 grille is the right product, far superior to the other grilles we had in this opening before. We are really happy with the performance and will definitely purchase this product going forward, when the next opportunity arises."
MARK ARGABRIGHT, FACILITY MANAGER AT YOHN PROPERTY MANAGEMENT
"Not only was functionality a major concern, but we also needed a custom closure solution that worked with the overall exterior aesthetic of the building which is rooted in neighborhood context. We collaborated with CornellCookson to develop a solution that is both functional and architecturally sensitive."
EUGENE FLOTTERON, CETRARUDDY ARCHITECTURE
"The SteelWeave Metal Mesh Grille was the perfect solution to meet all of our needs. It complimented the design of the bar and lobby while adding some elegance. We could not be happier with the look and function of our CornellCookson SteelWeave Metal Mesh Grille and custom sliding panel."
