Picture this: a gleaming hotel lobby, shining with after an early morning cleaning. You hear the burbling of an espresso machine as a latte order begins, and the air smells of sweet pastries tinged with a slight hint of fresh laundry. Seems like an idyllic morning in the middle of the busy corporate hubbub, right?
What may not catch your eye in this scene are the safety measures such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and other fire protection devices scattered throughout the facility, including a fabric fire curtain that will help to save lives and prevent the spread of smoke and fire during an emergency.
Despite not being prominent decorations, these measures are taken to protect the building’s staff and visitors in the event of a fire. While sprinkler systems have been on the market since 1812, CornellCookson’s fabric smoke and fire curtain is a new innovation that burst onto the scene in 2021.
Designed to help save lives and prevent property damage, our new fire safety closure compartmentalizes dangerous fire and smoke for life safety in atrium areas, corridors, and other openings in fire or smoke barrier walls.
Luckily for our modern-day buildings, a new innovation has entered the market to combat the negative effects of age-old fire: Cornell’s SmokeShield® Fabric Smoke and Fire.
This first of its kind curtain is ideal for use in new construction and retrofit projects. It is a 3-hour UL listed product with a small footprint that enables specifiers and fire planning professionals expanded flexibility in the field.
This unique fire protection curtain is a coiling protective engineered with patented GuideLock™ technology that positively seals the curtain within the guide channels, preventing smoke and fire from migrating throughout a building. For owner convenience, a battery backup prevents curtain deployment during power interruptions, eliminating unintended curtain closures. Because it deploys upon notification by the fire alarm control panel or local smoke detectors, you can rest assured that smoke and fire will be stopped dead in their tracks and sectioned off with SmokeShield.
Employing the SmokeShield Fabric Smoke and Fire system allows you to minimize or eliminate expensive smoke extraction systems, resulting in savings of weight, space, and overall cost.
Providing superior smoke mitigation, the closure enables specifiers and building owners to limit deadly smoke inhalation, adding precious time to occupancy evacuation plans. The closure also limits property and inventory losses in addition to work stoppages due to the damaging effects of these events.
Specifiers and designers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the SmokeShield closure not only compartmentalizes fire and smoke but also looks great while doing so. Its exposed components can be finished with custom powder coat to match, complement, or contrast with the building’s surroundings to add to (not detract from) the overall aesthetic.
