Brian Murdoch’s day starts with loading production schedules for various products. These products include the C20 and Thermiser curtains, bottom bars, and Cookson legacy slats. From there, he and his team line up their jobs with a production start date to ensure customers orders get shipped efficiently. Brian then checks labor requirements and distributes associates throughout his four production bays.
“As a production supervisor, I’m responsible for completing our units on schedule. But, more Importantly, I prioritize keeping our team safe every day,” explained Brian. “We will never put our team members in harm’s way to complete a unit. Our emphasis is on safety first, followed by quality, and production.”
Brian stays focused on his team's production goals by conducting hourly checks. This proactive approach allows him to quickly address any issues that could hinder production. To enhance his efficiency, Brian utilizes tools such as C5, or the 5 Whys technique, which expedites problem-solving by identifying their root causes.
According to Brian, teamwork and collaboration are paramount to the success of his team.
“To maintain the efficiency of our production lines and ensure the safety of our associates, it’s imperative to maintain excellent communication across all four shifts,” he states. “We facilitate smooth transitions between shifts through brief meetings and utilize the End Of Shift email process to effectively communicate all relevant information.”
“We are continuously improving our processes and equipment to make us more successful as a company,” Brian further explained. “We design new tooling, reevaluate our processes to continually improve safety and production, try new safety equipment to help with ergonomics, and always use our employee feedback to help make us better.”
Each day poses unique challenges as Brian and his team collaborate across departments to fulfill large door orders, ranging from 1 ft. to 60 ft.. Brian detailed the process of meticulously scheduling large units to guarantee sufficient manpower for the safe construction of these massive doors.
Brian emphasizes, “It requires the collective effort of our entire team to manufacture our door curtains."
With a sense of pride and satisfaction, Brian and his team are dedicated to delivering top-quality custom products. Their expertise extends to fabricating a wide range of customized solutions, including creating custom bottom bars and curb plates, punching curtains into intricate window patterns, and more.
Where he takes pride in production, he also is dedicated to helping his team grow, "I really enjoy helping lead associates grow into supervisors," shared Brian. "I'm here to support them every step of the way as they aim for leadership roles."
"At Clopay Corporation, it's the family-like atmosphere that makes us unique. Our priority is performing our jobs safely, ensuring everyone can return home to their families and hobbies,” said Brian. “Whether you're a newcomer or a veteran with 30 years under your belt, there's always someone ready to lend a hand.
